Zvonimir Mihanovic

Zvonimir Mihanovic was born August 12, 1946, in Sitno Donje near Split, on the beautiful Dalmatian coast of Croatia -- both the inspiration and subject of his tranquil scenes. There are over 1100 islands along this long stretch of Adriatic coastline. Across from Italy and north of Greece, Dalmatia holds much in common with these her ancient ancestors and modern neighbors -- this is reflected in the seascapes and landscapes of Mihanovic's world. Using the common, familiar and attractive images of his homeland Mihanovic draws one into his paintings -- but it is not the amazing details or scenery that holds the viewer's interest but the atmospheric quality that Mihanovic imbues each work of art. One is transported eyond the common and familiar to a place of peacefulness and tranquillity. Mihanovic's brushwork accurately describes his subjects without depriving them of their abiding poetry. Mihanovic graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. After successful exhibitions and acclaim in his native country, he continued his studies at the Academia di Brera in Milan and went on to graduate in 1976 from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris. He won international acclaim when as a young painter he was awarded the coveted Grand Prix in 1978 at the prestigious Salon d'Automne, held annually in the Grand Palais, Paris. Although this recognition launched an international career, Mihanovic continues to maintain a studio in his native Split. His originals painted oil on canvas can take from 2 to 6 months to finish. When feasible, paintings are begun on location and finished in his studio; other times pencil and watercolor sketches capture the moment later to be translated to canvas. As a "Modern Master of Realism," Mihanovic is a refreshing welcome to the world of contemporary art. Currently Mihanovic is part of the Paris Maison De L'UNESCO exhibit celebrating the ancient culture of the city of Split, Croatia and 1700 years of Diocletian's palace. This coming fall and winter the Croatian government and Bosnian government are sponsoring retrospective exhibits on the work of Mihanovic in the cities of Zagreb, Split and Sarajevo.
